'Otherness' Drives Day Space Night's Latest Flora and Fauna Filled Collection
Kris Chau and Samantha Margherita are doing the unthinkable in fashion with their line Day Space Night: they are creating collections of clothing that's not driven by trends, mostly in one-size-fits-all styles that are made (in limited runs) start to finish in Los Angeles. It's not always convenient, but their creative and sustainable methods are of paramount importance to the design duo.
Day Space Night has already released two other collections and two workwear collections, and their latest crop continues with their now-signature stamp of unique floral prints, which the women describe as "thick with botanicals from another time and dahlias that bite back." The ladies of DSN also credit "Otherness [...] parts of ourselves that go unrecorded" with inspiration for the unisex pants, cropped shirts, dresses, and overalls within Collection III. The other original prints include a melange of animal textures and a collaboration with jewelry and metal goods label Fixed Air, which is decorated with organically shaped line drawings. True to form, the silhouettes are often changeable (belted/unbelted) and designed to flatter a variety of body types.
Kris and Sam are ushering in their latest batch of cool clothing while celebrating one year as Day Space Night with a party at their Chinatown studio (937 Sun Mun Way) this Saturday, November 19th from 7-10pm. Check out the goods and toast a Topo Chico to Kris and Sam devoting a lot more years to creating fashion on their own terms.
