Detox Your Hair With This DIY Mask
It's summertime, which means very likely your hair is suffering for any number of reasons: excess oils, product build-up (from trying to combat aforementioned oils), and elements like wind, water, and sun. Because those elements can be terribly drying, you also don't want to over-shampoo your hair—which makes it even drier. So how to deal with the summer greasies? This three-ingredient hair mask will remove excess gunk, strengthen your strands, and lock in natural moisture, without weighing you down. And even better? You may already have a few (if not all) of them in your kitchen already.
This treatment's star is a beauty/wellness super ingredient: apple cider vinegar. Among its many uses, ACV balances pH and it has cleansing properties which makes it great for oily skin or scalps. When used in hair, it helps remove buildup, which lets the hair naturally shine. To balance any drying effect the vinegar might have, add honey, which is a humectant, and yogurt, which has strength-building protein. Start with a dollop of full-fat, plain yogurt and mix in a drizzle of honey and a healthy splash of the vinegar (look for a raw, unfiltered kind like Braggs). Saturate your hair with the mixture and fasten into a bun, then cover with plastic wrap and wait about 20 minutes. If you wait too long, or let the mixture dry, your scalp may smell like ACV for all eternity (or until the next time you wash and dry it).
Afterward, wash and condition as you normally would and voilà! For me, my hair felt springy and weightless with decidedly more shine. Try this mask every two weeks, or whenever your hairs needs a little oomph.
